This 12,000-square-foot family home in Kolkata is inspired by Nordic design sensibilities

This home in Kolkata, perched on a high-rise overlooking the sprawling City of Joy, draws inspiration from the Nordic design style popularised in the 1950s. Meet Frida, a light and airy 12,000-square-foot residence envisioned by Arunika Sarkar, Founder and Principal Designer, and Arindam Chatterjee, Partner at Arredatore Design Studio. Tailored for a family of tea estate owners, this smart home boasts a minimalistic and practical approach with understated luxury.

The lower two levels of the home in Kolkata boast a lofty double-height space, creating a sense of openness and grandeur in the living and dining areas. The space is enhanced by the use of alabastrine white and taupe, featuring muted tones that serve as a neutral canvas. A gorgeous Italian marble installation graces this double-height wall, making it a conversation starter. Modernity is emphasised by the sleek furniture and furnishings from Wriver, Spacio, Stellar Furnishings, and Sarita Handa.

A seamless staircase constructed in RCC with a concrete sculpted railing interconnects all the floors of the apartment. Soft curves and subtle texture paints aligns well with the Nordic theme of the house. The staircase wall is panelled with Italian-dyed veneer, adorned with an art piece, while the steps’ landings are clad with Italian marble, complementing the off-white colour of the railing. The ground floor of the triplex comprises the public spaces of the house and only one bedroom, belonging to the couple’s parents.

Ascending to the first floor of this expansive abode, Nordic elements—clean lines, uncluttered spaces, and organic shapes—take precedence. The first floor houses the guest room and the son’s room, where muted tones soothe the eyes. Notably, some walls of the guest room were replaced with full-height glass, offering views of the double-height living and dining room below. This architectural choice enhances the spaciousness of the area and seamlessly connects different zones of the home.

The son’s room also embraces a minimal aesthetic. Furnishings throughout the house, including this room, are inspired by hygge, a Danish concept that embodies cosiness and contentment, integral to Nordic design. Therefore, soft textiles such as velvets, linen, and suedes adorn upholstery and curtains, while hand-tufted woollen rugs from Jaipur Rugs enhance the comfortable seating arrangements.
